Iran has closed the strategic Strait of Hormuz. Iranian armed forces justify this action by citing the blockade imposed by the United States on Iranian ports. According to the British maritime security agency, Iranian boats opened fire on a tanker in the strait.
Donald Trump declared on Friday night that he would maintain the blockade if no peace agreement is reached with Tehran, adding that he may not extend the ceasefire after it expires on Wednesday. Trump also stated that Iran had agreed “never to close the Strait of Hormuz again.”
Meanwhile, a first convoy of ships carrying petrochemical products set sail on Saturday in the Gulf and headed towards the strait. At least eight tankers and gas carriers crossed the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday morning.
In this context, the Egyptian foreign minister said on Saturday that he is “working tirelessly” alongside Pakistan to reach a “final agreement” between the United States and Iran “in the coming days.”
Meanwhile, in Lebanon, a French soldier was killed and three others were injured in the southern part of the country during an attack on UN peacekeepers, announced French President Emmanuel Macron.
