The tension between Israel and Italy has escalated after Rome accused the Israeli state of firing warning shots at a convoy of Italian peacekeepers in Lebanon. The situation has strained relations between the two countries, with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announcing on Tuesday, April 14, that her government would “suspend the automatic renewal” of the defense agreement between Italy and Israel.
“Given the current situation, the government has decided to suspend the automatic renewal of the defense agreement with Israel,” stated Giorgia Meloni during a visit to Verona, as reported by Italian news agencies ANSA and AGI.
The defense agreement, ratified in 2006 and automatically renewed every five years, was set to expire soon. It regulates cooperation between the two countries in defense industry, military training, research, and information technologies, among other areas.
The Italian opposition had been calling for the suspension of this renewal for several months. The tensions between Italy and Israel escalated last week after the Italian government accused Israeli forces of firing warning shots at a convoy of Italian peacekeepers in Lebanon.
Italy summoned the Israeli ambassador to protest against the incident, which damaged at least one vehicle but did not cause any injuries. Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani also condemned the “unacceptable attacks” by Israel against civilians in Lebanon during a visit to Beirut.
The Italian Foreign Minister called for dialogue between Lebanon and Israel and a “necessary and sustainable ceasefire,” adding, “It is essential to prevent a new escalation like the one in Gaza at all costs.”
