Conference and Film Screening on Women’s History in the United States at Cinema Grand Angle
As part of UNIPOP – History from city to city, Cinema Grand Angle is hosting a cinema-conference evening on Monday, March 9.
At 6:30 pm, a video conference will be led by Virginie Adane, a lecturer in modern history at Nantes University and a specialist in North American history. The theme will be: “Women and History in the United States.”
“In 2024, for the second time in the country’s history, a woman found herself in a position to reach the presidency of the United States, during a campaign marked by a fight for reproductive rights and a violently misogynistic rhetoric, intensified since Donald Trump’s inauguration. Behind these events, structural inequalities have long relegated women to the margins of public space, which also influences the way history is written and told. Since the 1970s, a rich historiographical tradition has invited a reexamination of the history of the United States, from the early colonial societies to the feminists of the 21st century.”
The evening will continue at 8:30 pm with the screening of the film “On the Basis of Sex” (2019), directed by Mimi Leder, starring Felicity Jones, Armie Hammer, and Justin Theroux (duration: 2h01).
The film tells the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who, after having a child, faces the absence of law firms willing to hire a woman. When she takes on a tax case, she sees an opportunity to advance her career and change the perception of justice towards women.
