Big Mistakes on Netflix: our review of this irreverent series

The excellent Dan Levy plays a gay pastor and the son of actress Metcalf in Big Mistakes.

You probably remember Laurie Metcalf for her role in the series Roseanne. In the new comedy thriller Big Mistakes on Netflix, she has to deal with her son’s blunders (a gay pastor) and her daughter (rebellious and lost), as well as the death of her own mother and her mayoral election. Hilarious and irreverent.

This is both fresh and corrosive! It’s not every day that Netflix releases something as sharp, rhythmic, and clever as this, especially in the predominantly sweet world of American comedy. Dan Levy and Rachel Sennott have co-created a series based on a brother and sister they dreamed of embodying on screen. Success, Rachel’s schedule was taken up by shooting the sequel to the hit I Love LA on HBO.

Don’t leave just yet, because her replacement is worth her weight in gold. In the role of Morgan, a teacher who missed the Hollywood boat, we have the astonishing Taylor Ortega. Dan Levy, revealed by the excellent series Schitt’s Creek that he created with his father Eugene, plays Nicky, a devoted pastor to his small community, but also to his partner.

He is very in love with Tareq, but his homosexuality is as well kept a secret as the existence of Christ and the strange gangster life that this sibling duo, who are complete opposites, will lead.

It will take a mundane event for Morgan and Nicky to find themselves reluctantly caught up in the local, then international underworld. The sister is a rebellious thirty-something and a bit lost, unable to determine if her boyfriend and job are right for her.

The brother, probably the most exasperated man in the world, constantly frustrated, always making a mountain out of a molehill, will be the less willing of the two to digest the turmoil of their second life as outlaws.

Transformed into the right-hand man and woman of a Turkish fence gang in a bid to save their lives, Nicky and Morgan tussle morning to night, with a referee who would rather be doing something else: their mom. Played by the excellent Laurie Metcalf, Linda has just lost her own mother and has just started a clumsy campaign to become the town’s mayor.

That’s how the kids’ Big Mistakes land in her daily life like an apocalypse on Earth. Strong, but at the end of her tether, caring, but particularly tough, Linda breathes hot and cold in her own family with a joyfully corrupted charm. One who has seen it all.

Two high-quality ingredients make the mayonnaise of this dark comedy rise: the actors’ performances are close to perfection, and the dialogues are delightful. It’s intense, rhythmic, very funny, and totally irreverent, with jokes that often catch you off guard.

Special mention for the soundtrack, composed specifically for the occasion by Dan Levy’s compatriot, Canadian Peaches. Featuring a cleverly sparkling electro-punk that acts as an indispensable supporting player: “There’s a euphoria that comes when you create things and a piece of the puzzle arrives and far surpasses all of our expectations,” the showrunner told the American press. We concur.

The infectious energy displayed in this first season of Big Mistakes bodes well for a totally deserved second round.
