Hungary Elects New Prime Minister
In a surprising outcome, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán lost his bid for a fifth consecutive term on Sunday, following a high voter turnout reminiscent of the post-communism era.
Voters, primarily driven by concerns over government corruption, overwhelmingly chose Péter Magyar, a 45-year-old lawyer and politician, over Orbán, who had been in power for 16 years.
Magyar, leader of the Tisza Party, promised to strengthen Hungary’s ties with the European Union and NATO, eliminate corruption, and restore checks and balances in the system.
The EU froze funding to Hungary in 2022, citing democratic value violations by Orbán’s administration.
Magyar’s victory, described as unprecedented by experts, has raised hopes for increased democracy in Hungary, although there are concerns regarding his ability to follow through on his promises.
Magyar’s background, including a scandal involving his ex-wife, Judit Varga, and a rise as a whistleblower in 2024, has added complexity to his political journey.
The recognition of Magyar’s win by Western leaders has been generally positive, with the exception of former U.S. President Donald Trump, known for his support of Orbán.
