DÉCRYPTAGE – Between the lack of a majority, a tight schedule, and upcoming elections, the texts on active euthanasia and palliative care may not see the light of day until 2027.

The master of clocks no longer has much control over time. Urged by his troops to act quickly, Emmanuel Macron would like to have his end-of-life text adopted before his term ends. But the political parameters – lack of a majority, tight schedule, upcoming elections – are not really in favor of euthanasia advocates.

Since Monday, the project – which includes a part on assisted suicide and another on palliative care – has made its return to the Hemicycle. For this second reading, members of parliament have until February 24th to examine the text, followed by a vote. According to the parliamentary process, the text will be studied again by senators, likely at the end of March or beginning of April. Three weeks ago, during the first reading, the senators had rejected it. The situation could repeat itself, as the political center of the upper house, predominantly right-wing, is more conservative.
