The US Secretary of Defense announces that an American submarine has torpedoed and sunk an Iranian ship, a first since World War II.

An American submarine sank an Iranian warship in the Indian Ocean on Tuesday, March 3, as announced on Wednesday by US Defense Minister Pete Hegseth.

“Yesterday in the Indian Ocean (…) an American submarine sank an Iranian warship that thought it was safe in international waters. Instead, it was sunk by a torpedo,” Pete Hegseth declared during a press conference at the Pentagon, emphasizing that this enemy ship was the first to be sunk by an American torpedo since World War II.

Several bodies recovered

Present by his side, Chief of Staff General Dan Caine specified that “for the first time since 1945, a US Navy fast-attack submarine sank an enemy combatant ship using a single Mark 48 torpedo, with immediate effect, sending the warship to the bottom of the ocean.”

According to Sri Lankan authorities, nearly 150 people are missing and several bodies have been recovered after the sinking of the Iranian frigate Dena off the coast of Sri Lanka, following what crew members described as an explosion.

The Sri Lankan navy rescued 32 sailors but hope is dwindling for the other 148 crew members of the frigate, as stated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the rule and military officials.

“We have destroyed more than 20 Iranian warships, including, in addition to the frigate located outside the zone (Indian Ocean), a submarine, and have neutralized, at this stage, Iran’s major naval presence in this area,” detailed Chief of Staff Dan Caine.
