The war launched by the United States and Israel against Iran is currently threatening to ignite the entire Persian Gulf. The strikes, carried out jointly by the administration of Donald Trump and the government of Benjamin Netanyahu, against the Tehran regime this past weekend, resulted in the death of the Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran retaliated with attacks on Israel and several neighbors including Dubai, Doha, Abu Dhabi, Oman, and even Cyprus within the European Union, with a drone crashing at the British base of Akrotiri. This Monday morning, Lebanon was dragged into the conflict as a series of Israeli raids were launched in the region of Beirut after rocket attacks claimed by Hezbollah.

“We are witnessing a historic geopolitical shift in the Middle East like the world has not seen since the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War,” commented Cedric Perrin, senator of LR and president of the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. Questions arise about the survival of the Iranian Islamic Republic in the short term as well as the risk of regional destabilization. The tension is palpable, especially on social media where expatriates in the Emirates are sharing and commenting on images of smoke rising in the Dubai sky.

The situation has prompted concerns over a potential domino effect in the region, with fears of a resurgence of terrorism and economic consequences linked to the closure of airspaces and tension on oil resources. Stock markets reflect this instability, with the Paris Stock Exchange opening down by 1.88% on Monday, signaling a volatile energy and defense sector while affecting air travel and tourism.

French President Emmanuel Macron and Foreign Affairs Minister Jean-Noel Barrot have expressed concerns about the impact of this war on international peace and security, especially for the French citizens residing in the Middle East. However, there is an acknowledgment of a diplomatic ambivalence in the face of the removal of a leader like Ali Khamenei, raising questions about the future of the regime and the international community’s response.

As the situation unfolds, there are calls for a reevaluation of military strategies and a review of the national defense budget. Political figures are urged to come together to address the crisis and ensure the safety of their citizens and national interests in the Middle East. Special meetings and discussions are scheduled to analyze the evolving situation and its implications, emphasizing the need for a coordinated and strategic response.
