Argentinian President Javier Milei announced a ambitious plan of 90 reforms in Parliament on Sunday, to “redesign” Argentina “for the next 50 years.” Milei stated that “nine uninterrupted months of structural reforms will reshape the institutional architecture of the New Argentina,” in his speech on the state of the nation, the third of his presidency, marking the second half of his term. He mentioned, among other things, without going into detail, tax reforms, judicial system, criminal code, and the electoral system.
President since 2023, Javier Milei begins this parliamentary year in a position of political strength, consolidated by an electoral success in the mid-term legislative elections in October, and bolstered by his regulatory momentum with several recently passed reforms by Parliament, such as the recent and divisive labor law reform, towards a more flexible approach.
The Argentine head of state also declared his intention to make a “lasting strategic alliance” with the United States of his ally Donald Trump a “state policy,” especially to act in the “strategic rivalry field” of the South Atlantic.
“The Atlantic south is the stage of strategic rivalry for the next decades. Commercial routes, natural resources, maritime sovereignty, and the growing presence of actors who do not share our values,” he added without specifying a particular country.
“The one who controls them will control a part of the global labor,” and Argentina “must be an actor” in this evolution, he warned. “We must create the century of the Americas: Make Americas Great Again, from Alaska to Tierra del Fuego. Let’s restore Argentina and America to their greatness,” the Argentine president also stated regarding the alliance with the United States.
