The Memphis Zoo has temporarily closed its bonobo enclosure following an incident involving Mobali, one of the primates, who attacked visitors after being provoked. The zoo stated that the incident occurred on Thursday but that no one, including visitors or the monkey, was injured. The damage was limited to a cracked glass barrier that separates the bonobos from humans.
A video circulating on social media and verified by NBC News shows Mobali lashing out at a group of mocking teenagers. The zoo emphasized that the behavior of the adolescents had disrupted the daily routine and well-being of the animals. Melissa Peterson, the assistant curator of primates at the zoo, explained that the group deliberately provoked a reaction from the bonobos, causing stress and anger.
Peterson emphasized the importance of treating the animals with respect in their home, stating that visitors are drawn to primates because of their similarity to humans, but often fail to establish the right kind of connection with them. One of the teenagers involved, Josiah Long, denied any disrespectful intentions, stating that they were surprised by Mobali’s approach and initially laughed out of shock.
The mockery by the teenagers will result in the bonobos being deprived of part of their enclosure during repairs. The zoo highlighted the need for respectful behavior towards the animals to ensure their well-being.
