Dozens of people, including a father of a family, were released due to an amnesty law passed under pressure from the United States by interim president Delcy Rodriguez after the capture of President Nicolas Maduro on January 3. The father, tearful, expressed, “This family love, this freedom, is priceless. Long live free Venezuela.” His family welcomed him home with balloons in the colors of Venezuela while the national anthem played in the background.
The released man, a 41-year-old forensic police inspector, had been arrested in September 2024 on charges of treason, terrorism, conspiracy, and collaboration. His family believes he was targeted for investigating espionage cases. His wife organized a reception for him, sleeping for over a month near the prison where he was detained. Since his release, he has been overwhelmed with emotion, holding his wife’s hand and letting her lead the way.
The release of the man, Reinardo Morillo, was celebrated by his neighborhood and entire city with a festival. His family and neighbors gathered to welcome him home enthusiastically despite the initial setup missing as the children ran to his van upon arrival. Morillo was filled with surprise and embraced those around him.
The family spokesperson, Gracie Arana, continues to advocate for freedom in Venezuela, declaring that the fight continues even with her husband home. Morillo benefited from the amnesty approved by the Parliament last week under pressure from Washington. Over 200 people have been released, but there are still over 500 political prisoners in Venezuelan jails according to the NGO Foro Penal.
The family expressed gratitude for their father’s safe return, with the hope to reunite as a strong, united family. The celebration of their reunion extended late into the night.
