Key points of the speech
-
The promise of a new “Golden Age” of economic prosperity : Despite a growth slowdown in the fourth quarter, the president touted his record, promised new tax cuts, and reaffirmed his commitment to maintaining punitive tariffs despite opposition from the Supreme Court.
-
A hardline stance on immigration : Trump called for the passage of the SAVE America Act to tighten access to voting and highlighted his tough stance on immigration, sparking heated tensions in the chamber and the symbolic departure of several Democratic lawmakers.
-
A combative stance on the international stage : The president raised the threat of military intervention against Iran in the absence of a nuclear agreement, while claiming a series of diplomatic and military victories (Ukraine, Middle East, Venezuela) under his doctrine of “peace through strength.”
5:25 a.m. The Democratic response was delivered by Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger, who directly countered Donald Trump’s triumphant narrative. In a much more concise format than the presidential speech, she criticized his policies on purchasing power and immigration, explaining that it is the middle and working classes who bear the brunt of price increases, cuts in public services, and the harshness of immigration measures.
Speaking directly to viewers – “Americans, you at home” – she emphasized that “you can demand more,” reassuring that Democrats “are working to lower costs, keep our communities and country secure, and work for you,” painting the image of a camp that wants to address economic anxieties differently from Trump, through more protective social policies and a rejection of authoritarian excesses.
4:59 a.m. End of the State of the Union speech, lasting one hour and forty-seven minutes. The longest ever delivered by a U.S. president. According to the American Presidency Project series, the previous record was held by Bill Clinton in 2000 with about 1 hour 28 minutes, while Trump himself had already surpassed all his predecessors in 2025 with a speech to Congress of about 1 hour 40 minutes. Richard Nixon had set the opposite record: less than 30 minutes in 1972.
On the substance, Trump concluded his address by intertwining two themes that encapsulate his staging of the evening: military might and the myth of a new “Golden Age” of America. He first claimed his “peace through strength” line, explaining that his firmness towards Iran is part of a strategy to build “the most powerful military on the planet,” thanks to budgets approved by Republicans and the pressure he claims to have exerted to encourage NATO allies to increase their defense spending.
