Context:

Three weeks before the first round of municipal elections in Paris, Jean-Marc Schiappa appears on Sophia Chikirou’s list (LFI) while his daughter, Marlène Schiappa, is committed to a competing list led by Pierre-Yves Bournazel (Horizons).

Less than three weeks before the first round of municipal elections in Paris, a name at the bottom of Sophia Chikirou’s list on Tuesday, February 24, caught attention. That name is Jean-Marc Schiappa. An historian and specialist in the French Revolution, a Trotskyist activist, he is listed at the bottom of the far-left candidate’s list.

Jean-Marc Schiappa is the father of Marlène Schiappa, former minister and state secretary of Emmanuel Macron. Marlène is also involved in the Paris municipal campaign, appearing in sixth position on the Horizons-Renaissance list led by Pierre-Yves Bournazel.

Déjà des critiques en 2018

This is not the first time their differences have been expressed publicly. In 2018, when Marlène Schiappa was secretary of state for gender equality, her father posted a critical message on Facebook. He criticized her for quoting a supposed phrase from Karl Marx after Emmanuel Macron’s statement on the “crazy money” spent on social benefits.

Today, at 70 years old and co-responsible for the History department at the La Boétie Institute, Jean-Marc Schiappa remains discreet about his daughter’s political choices and has not commented on this new situation.

“I haven’t inherited anything”

Marlène Schiappa, on the other hand, stands by this family disagreement. “Fortunately, in democracy, daughters are not obliged to vote like their fathers (and vice versa) and I have built my own ideas and my own political trajectory. I haven’t inherited anything,” she explains. “We are in political disagreement […], which doesn’t stop us from coming together as a family to debate politics or anything else!” she adds.
