Charles Kushner Skips French Foreign Ministry Summon

  • Charles Kushner did not show up at the French Foreign Ministry on Monday evening.
  • The US Ambassador to France was summoned due to Trump administration’s comments on Quentin Deranque’s death.
  • “The Minister asked that he no longer have direct access to French government members,” stated the Quai d’Orsay.

Charles Kushner missed his summon at the Quai d’Orsay. The American ambassador in Paris, “did not appear” at the summon on Monday, February 23, in the evening, by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following the comments from the Trump administration regarding the death of a far-right extremist student, Quentin Deranque, 23, as lamented by Quai d’Orsay.

“Given this apparent misunderstanding of the expectations of an ambassador’s mission with the honor of representing his country, the Minister (Jean-Noël Barrot) requested that he no longer have direct access to French government members,” added the ministry. “It is still possible for Ambassador Charles Kushner to carry out his mission and present himself to the Quai d’Orsay so that we can have diplomatic exchanges to smooth out the inevitable irritants that may arise in a 250-year-old friendship relationship,” it nonetheless specified.

A diplomatic source told AFP that the ambassador was represented by a US embassy official, citing personal commitments.

Jean-Noël Barrot “Rejects any Instrumentalization”

Charles Kushner was summoned on Monday at 7 pm at the request of Jean-Noël Barrot, who had denounced on Sunday the comments by the Trump administration, reposted by the American embassy in Paris on its X account, on the death of Quentin Deranque, “a tragedy concerning the national community”. The American administration had denounced far-left political violence and called for holding those responsible accountable.

“We reject any instrumentalization of this tragedy (…) for political purposes”, emphasized Jean-Noël Barrot on the radio on Sunday, stating that France had “no reason to discuss violence, particularly with any international shareholders.”
