Conference on the Rule of Law in the United States

Conference organized by the Legal Section of the France-Amériques Circle, in partnership with the Club des Juristes, the Paris Bar Association, and the French Association of Law Doctors (AFDD).

One year later, the question of the rule of law in the United States emerges as a central issue in the democratic debate. Between institutional tensions, controversial judicial decisions, and increased political polarization, the functioning of checks and balances is closely scrutinized.

The role of the Supreme Court, the relationship between the executive and legislative branches, as well as citizens’ trust in institutions are at the heart of the analyses. This conference took stock of recent developments and their implications for American democracy, questioning the strength of legal standards in the face of political and media pressures.

Finally, it opened a debate on the international scope of these developments and on the perception of the American model abroad. One year later, the rule of law appears to be both tested and reaffirmed.
