The annual meeting of the Central Sector of the Departmental Union of Blood Donor Associations of Bas-Rhin for volunteer blood donation allowed Frédéric Colle, president of UD 67, to take stock of the blood collections in Bas-Rhin in 2025.

Thus, only 40,824 donors (51% women and 49% men), out of the 782,197 people aged 18 to 70 capable of donating, did so at least once in the year. The generosity index, which measures the number of donors relative to the number of inhabitants, was 5.22% in 2025 compared to 5.23% in 2024. It is stable but, as teachers would say, “there is room for improvement”.

Exponential Needs

Where the shoe pinches is in plasma donation. Only 7,449 people donated plasma, resulting in a generosity index of 0.95%. “We only cover 30% of the needs when, with research advancements, they are exponential,” highlights Orianne Kopp, communication officer at the French Blood Establishment (EFS).

Plasma is used for research, patients in intensive care, polytrauma victims, hemorrhage victims, burn victims, hemophiliacs, and patients with immune deficiency and cancer. “60% of our plasma comes from the United States, making us very dependent. Under the Trump administration, it was rather risky,” notes Frédéric Colle.

That’s why EFS regularly campaigns and Orianne Kopp calls for plasma donation. “You can donate every business day at the Donor Center at 10 rue Spielmann in Strasbourg or by making an appointment with the EFS.”
