A slap in the face for Donald Trump. The Democratic opposition won the district where the president’s residence of Mar-a-Lago is located in Florida, according to projections by American media on Wednesday, March 25. In this partial legislative election for the Florida House of Representatives, Democrat Emily Gregory triumphs over Republican Jon Maples, a candidate supported by the president, according to CNN, the New York Times and other American media.
This local election in district 87 of Florida takes on a symbolic dimension as it houses the luxurious property where Donald Trump spends most of his weekends. In 2024, Mike Caruso, the Republican candidate in this district, won with a 19-point lead. He resigned in August after being appointed to the Palm Beach court by Florida’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, leading to a partial election. Donald Trump himself voted by mail for this election, as reported by American media.
This vote comes eight months away from the mid-term federal elections in November, where the Republican majority appears to be weakened. “If Democrats can win in Trump’s stronghold, we can certainly win everywhere in the country. Onward to November!” wrote Ken Martin, president of the National Democratic Committee, on the X platform. Democrats have won the vast majority of partial elections since Donald Trump took office in January 2025, including in a traditionally Republican state like Texas in January.
Emily Gregory’s election will not change the balance of power within the Florida legislative assembly, where Republicans hold a significant majority. However, this state has not escaped the Democratic wave. Boca Raton, about fifty kilometers south of Palm Beach, elected its first Democratic mayor in 45 years in early March. And in December, a Democrat won the mayoral race in Miami, a first in almost 30 years.
