The European Commission stated on Sunday that it expects the United States to honor their trade agreement with the EU, as the EU respects its own commitments. This comes after President Donald Trump announced plans to increase tariffs following a setback in the Supreme Court related to his aggressive trade policies.
The European Commission also demanded “complete clarification on the measures the United States intends to take” following the Supreme Court’s decision. The invalidation of tariffs by the American Supreme Court raises doubts about the future of the trade agreement. The European Parliament, initially opposed to the agreement, was set to give its approval on Tuesday.
The agreement, signed last summer, allowed the EU to limit tariffs imposed by the United States on most of its products to 15%, far lower than the threatened 30% from the American president. German Social Democrat MEP Bernd Lange stated that he would request on Monday “the suspension of legislative work until we have a proper legal evaluation and clear commitments from the United States.”
Lange criticized the “total tariff chaos from the American administration,” expressing concerns and uncertainty for the EU and other trade partners of the United States. He emphasized the need for clarity and legal certainty before any new measures are taken.
