United States of the Middle East?: Donald Trump mocks Iran…and Greenland

On Saturday morning, Donald Trump added fuel to the fire, or rather to two fires. In two almost simultaneous Truth Social messages, the American President taunted both Iran and Greenland. Amid ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran, Trump shared a map of the Middle East superimposing the American flag on Iranian territory, titled “The United States of the Middle East?” without further explanation.

Friday, some American media outlets claimed that Washington was considering new strikes against Iran, sparking outrage from Tehran. The chief Iranian negotiator promised a “crushing” response if Trump resumed war, while the Iranian Foreign Minister accused the US of sabotaging peace negotiations.

Shortly after the Middle East map, Trump posted a photo manipulated by AI where his face is overlaid on mountains, creating the illusion that he is observing what seems to be a Greenlandic city, captioned “Hello, Greenland!”

The territory, owned by Denmark, has been openly coveted by the American President for months. The US Commissioner to Greenland stated on Wednesday that it was “time for the United States to strengthen its presence” on the territory. The following day, several Greenlanders expressed discontent after the inauguration of new premises at the American consulate in Nuuk, the capital of the Danish territory.
