United States: $200 billion request for war in Iran divides Congress

The Pentagon’s request for over 200 billion dollars in additional funding to finance the war in Iran is facing strong opposition in the US Congress. Democrats, as well as some Republicans, are questioning the necessity of such a large amount, especially as record military budgets have already been approved in recent months.

According to a US official, the Department of Defense has asked the White House to approve this request before officially submitting it to Congress. President Donald Trump has not yet submitted this request to the Senate and the House of Representatives, and his administration says the amount could still change.

Preliminary estimates suggest a particularly costly conflict, potentially the most expensive since the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to officials, the first six days of military operations against Iran have already cost over 11 billion dollars.

This new request comes amidst already high military spending. In January 2025, Donald Trump signed a budget law allocating around 840 billion dollars for defense in fiscal year 2026. The former president’s overall plan, including an additional 156 billion dollars for the military sector, was also approved, despite strong opposition from Democrats.

Democratic lawmakers denounce inconsistency, pointing out that these expenses come at a time when cuts have been made to social programs and international aid. They believe that lawmakers opposed to the conflict should not approve its funding.

Even within the Republican camp, questions are arising. Senator Susan Collins, chair of the appropriations committee, expressed surprise at the magnitude of the amount mentioned, considering it “considerably higher than expected.” She also mentioned her desire for public hearings to scrutinize this exceptional budget request.
