“Just two weeks after taking office, the ambassador of the United States to South Africa, Leo Brent Bozell III, seems determined to join a rather embarrassing club: that of American diplomats recently reprimanded by their host country,” quips South African journalist based in the United States, Redi Tlhabi, in a column published by the South African website Daily Maverick.

Following in the footsteps of his counterparts in France and Poland, the American ambassador to South Africa, Brent Bozell, was indeed summoned by the South African Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday, March 11, to explain comments deemed “undiplomatic,” as reported by the media outlet News24.

The day before, the diplomat had described the song Kill the Boer as “hate speech,” dismissing the decision of the South African court on the matter. “I’m sorry, but I don’t care what your courts say, it’s hate speech,” stated the ambassador during a meeting with business leaders organized by the South African website Biznews.

These remarks were made during his “first public speaking engagement,” as a columnist points out in a column published by the financial newspaper Business Day.
