The university police, city, and emergency services immediately responded, the institution said in a statement, adding that the injured were taken to a local hospital. “An armed individual opened fire at Old Dominion University, killing one and injuring two,” later confirmed by X Kash Patel, the FBI director, with the previous toll rising. “The shooter was subdued by a group of brave students who intervened and restrained him, actions that, combined with the swift response of law enforcement, undoubtedly saved lives,” he added.
Former National Guard Member
The FBI considers this attack “an act of terrorism,” emphasized Kash Patel. The shooter was identified by several American media outlets as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36, a former member of the National Guard who pleaded guilty in 2016 to attempting to support the Islamic State (ISIS). Sentenced to 11 years in prison, he was released in 2024, according to sources.
