The two enemy countries did not find common ground during negotiations in Pakistan. One of the points of contention between Washington and Tehran is the future of Iran’s nuclear program.

J.D. Vance faced the press with a stern face on Sunday, April 12. “So we are returning to the United States without reaching an agreement,” said the American vice president. Lack of long-term promises, an atmosphere of suspicion and mistrust: the day of negotiations between Washington and Tehran unfolded under high tension.

On the discussion table was a plan of around ten points, some of which could have been accepted by both parties. The United States reportedly agreed to sign a non-aggression pact with Iran and its allies, as well as to broker a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. The only demand with an unclear response is the release of over 100 billion dollars in frozen Iranian assets. Tehran, however, refers to American demands as unreasonable. It notably refuses to relinquish control of the strategically important Strait of Hormuz since the ceasefire came into effect.

Another point of contention is the future of Iran’s nuclear program. Donald Trump wants to prevent Iran from enriching uranium, which could have both civilian and military uses. Does this failure signal the end of all negotiations between the two countries? Iran implies that a door may still be open. “It was obvious from the start that we should not expect to reach an agreement in a single session. Nobody expected it,” stated Esmaeil Baqaei, the spokesman for the Iranian diplomacy.

The peace process is supported by Pakistan, the mediator in resolving this conflict. According to American sources, the Donald Trump administration may not be ready to engage in long and complex negotiations with Iran.
