On Sunday, April 12, following the start of negotiations between Iran and the United States regarding the war in the Middle East, the American delegation left Islamabad, Pakistan. The two countries are mutually accusing each other of the talks’ failure.

The negotiations between Iran and the United States concerning the Middle East war were tense from the beginning and ended in failure. During a brief press conference, American Vice President JD Vance, leading the American delegation, announced his return to the United States “without reaching an agreement.”

After 21 hours of discussions, he justified their failure by stating that the Islamic Republic made no “firm promises” regarding the abandonment of nuclear weapons, as reported by several media outlets including BFMTV. “We are leaving with a very simple proposal, an approach that represents our final and best offer. We will see if the Iranians accept it,” he added, suggesting that negotiations for a peace agreement could resume in the coming days.

“Nobody expected it”

On the other hand, Iran criticized the “unreasonable demands” of the United States. Iranian Foreign Minister Esmaeil Baqaei, a member of the Iranian delegation in Islamabad, stated, “The success of this diplomatic process depends on the seriousness and goodwill of the other party, refraining from any excess and illegal demands, as well as accepting Iran’s legitimate rights and interests.”

On Iranian state television, the diplomat added, “It was clear from the start that we should not expect to reach an agreement in a single session. Nobody expected it.” Despite this, Pakistan, the mediator of the talks, urges both countries to adhere to the ceasefire agreement in effect since Tuesday, April 7, for a period of two weeks.
