U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance announced on Sunday that the American delegation was leaving Pakistan without reaching an agreement with Iran after 21 hours of negotiations, stating that Iran had chosen not to accept American conditions.

Direct talks between Tehran and Washington were the highest-level since the Islamic Revolution in 1979 and the first direct talks since 2015 and the conclusion of a multilateral agreement on the Iranian nuclear program.

The issue of the Strait of Hormuz remains a stumbling block in negotiations between the two parties, according to several sources.

To reach an agreement, Tehran demands war reparations as well as control of the Strait of Hormuz and the establishment of a toll in this maritime thoroughfare through which 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) exports pass.
