Update: This photo shows Pakistani soldiers patrolling in Islamabad on April 9, 2026, as Pakistan prepares to host high-stakes discussions involving American and Iranian representatives on the war in the Middle East.

In Islamabad’s “red zone,” security has been significantly tightened as sensitive negotiations are set to begin on Saturday, April 10, between the U.S. and Iran.

With key routes blocked and armed patrols, the area that houses embassies and major institutions is now mostly inaccessible.

Authorities have declared two exceptional holidays since Thursday, closing off main roads leading to the zone. The luxury Serena Hotel near the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been emptied to potentially host delegations this weekend.

The U.S. delegation, led by Vice President JD Vance, Special Envoy Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner, is optimistic about reaching an agreement despite differences.

The Iranian side remains uncertain, with conflicting reports on the participation of Foreign Minister Abbas Araghtchi and Assembly President Mohammad Ghalibaf.

Tehran is advocating for a ceasefire in Lebanon, a stance rejected by Washington, which considers the Lebanese front a separate issue.

The Future of the Strait of Hormuz

Negotiations are based on a ten-point list Tehran submitted to establish a long-term peace agreement. This includes Iran’s control over the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime route for global oil transportation.

The proposal involves a payment mechanism for ships passing through the strait, with Iran reportedly seeking $1 per barrel to be paid in cryptocurrencies.

Washington’s position on this mechanism has evolved, with some reluctance towards Iranian control over a formerly open route.

Iran’s delay in resuming traffic in the strait is seen as essential for implementing the ceasefire, which has seen limited ship movement since coming into effect.

Uranium Enrichment in Iran

Discussions will also focus on the acceptance of uranium enrichment in Iran, a contentious issue for both parties involved.

Tehran considers uranium enrichment a red line, a sentiment reiterated by Iranian nuclear officials in recent statements.

On the contrary, Donald Trump has emphasized no uranium enrichment in Iran, a major goal of joint military operations with Israel.

Pakistan has assembled a team of experts to assist both sides in the negotiations on maritime navigation, nuclear issues, and more.

American Military Withdrawal and Iranian Missiles

Military matters will be addressed, with Iran seeking a non-aggression principle and the withdrawal of U.S. combat forces from the region.

Washington aims to discuss strict regulation of Iran’s ballistic program, including missile development suspension and enhanced control over arms transfers to Tehran’s allies, a stance Iran rejects.
