An American man charged with murder for killing the man accused of sexually assaulting his daughter has won the Republican nomination for sheriff in an Arkansas county, according to local electoral data.

Aaron Spencer is awaiting trial for the October 2024 killing of a 67-year-old man who had been charged with sexually abusing his 13-year-old daughter. State electoral data released this week showed Spencer received over 54% of the votes in the Republican primary for sheriff of Lonoke County, beating the incumbent John Staley by about 2,700 votes.

Election day is in November

John Staley conceded defeat on Wednesday, making Aaron Spencer the favorite to secure the sheriff position in this conservative county in the general election in November. Spencer pleaded not guilty to the murder charge and was released on bail pending his trial, which has not yet been scheduled, according to American media. If Spencer is elected but convicted at trial, he will no longer be allowed to serve as sheriff, the New York Times reported.
