Amnesty International on Tuesday called on the United Kingdom government to end its military support to the United States in the escalating conflict with Iran, specifically by revoking American forces’ access to British military bases, stating that recent threats made by American leaders seriously endanger civilians.
In a press release, Kristyan Benedict, Crisis Response Director for Amnesty International UK, stated that the situation “is an extremely dangerous moment for civilians in Iran and throughout the region.”
Referring to comments made today by President Trump, he warned that political leaders’ statements that “an entire civilization will die tonight” reflect a “dangerous language” and that the UK must “urgently end military support to the United States that could enable international law crimes, including war crimes.”
“An American strike has already killed over 168 people, including more than 100 children, in a school in Minab, Iran. Bridges and energy infrastructure have been bombed. The decision to allow the United States to use British military bases does not exist in a vacuum, it entails heavy human rights responsibilities,” he added.
“Amnesty International is categorical: threatening to systematically destroy civilian infrastructure is a threat to commit war crimes,” Benedict declared. “Attacking essential power plants crucial to the survival of tens of millions of civilians would be illegal. The UK must be just as categorical.”
Trump threatened to bomb power plants and bridges across Iran if Tehran did not reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reach an agreement by Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. (GMT Wednesday).
The region has been on high alert since Israel and the United States launched an offensive against Iran on February 28, killing over 1,400 people, including former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Tehran retaliated with drone and missile strikes targeting Israel, Jordan, Iraq, and Gulf countries hosting American military forces, causing human casualties, infrastructure damage, and disruptions to global markets and aviation.
