The press conference of Donald Trump on Iran Monday was the occasion for him to once again vehemently criticize NATO. The American president has indeed once again criticized the allies of the Atlantic Alliance who did not come to the aid of the United States in the war in Iran.
On the NATO issue, the occupant of the White House also took the opportunity to rekindle the dispute over Greenland, before the visit this week to Washington of the Secretary General of the Atlantic Alliance.
The United States threatens to leave NATO
“You know, it all started, if you want to know the truth, with Greenland. We want Greenland. They don’t want to give it to us. And I said, ‘Goodbye'”, declared the American president who threatened to leave NATO. The Republican leader wants to annex Greenland, a vast Arctic territory under the sovereignty of Denmark, a member of the Alliance, but he had to backtrack in the face of protests from European allies.
“NATO is a paper tiger,” reiterated Donald Trump during his press conference, emphasizing that Russian President Vladimir Putin is not afraid of NATO. “He is afraid of us, very afraid. He has often told me,” he said.
Meeting between Mark Rutte and Donald Trump Wednesday
NATO chief Mark Rutte is expected in Washington where he will have a meeting with Donald Trump on Wednesday, Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. “He’s coming to see me on Wednesday, as you know. He’s a great guy. The Secretary-General is great,” Donald Trump said.
Mark Rutte has been engaging in a balancing act for months between the invectives of the American president against European allies, whom he has, among other things, called “cowards,” and the concern to defend them without angering Donald Trump.
