An airplane made an emergency landing on a Pennsylvania highway on Saturday morning, causing traffic jams during this holiday weekend, according to our CBS colleagues.
The aircraft, a 1995 Commander 114B, had taken off from Solberg, New Jersey, for a flight to Indiana shortly after 9 a.m. when the 65-year-old pilot experienced an engine problem. The pilot tried to reach a local airport but ended up landing on the highway, between two cars, as shown in the footage from the driver’s dashboard camera behind. Neither he nor his 34-year-old passenger were injured. A fuel leak was said to be the cause of the engine failure.
“This was likely the best possible outcome for an incident of this nature,” said Justin Oswald, the county fire chief. The plane was towed to a local airport. The highway reopened around 1 p.m. Oswald emphasized that the firefighters had to be prepared for everything, including an airplane landing on a busy highway. “This is not a typical scenario we train for. So, I am very proud of the team,” he concluded.
