War in the Middle East: Iranian diplomacy trolls the United States on social media

The tension between the United States and Iran is no longer limited to the diplomatic or military arena: it now extends fully to the online communication war. In response to aggressive messages, Iran has chosen a quirky strategy. Several Iranian embassies around the world use humor and memes to respond to American provocations.

Some posts mock American military power, suggesting, for example, that the United States “only win wars in Hollywood” (posted by the Iranian embassy in South Africa), while others play on memes or words. For example, the Iranian embassy in Tunisia posted “CHAIR Force” (in reference to the US Air Force) accompanied by an image of an ejectable fighter jet seat generated by artificial intelligence.

AI enters the communication war

Because artificial intelligence is entering this communication war. Fake videos and images circulate and depict Donald Trump. The Iranian embassy in South Africa (once again) shared a clip, generated by AI, mocking the American plane shot down in Iran with LEGOs.

This can be seen as a reprisal against American communication. In addition to the tone of the American president in his messages on Truth Social, official accounts of the United States have heavily used references to popular culture or content generated by AI since Donald Trump’s return to the White House. One can recall the surrealist and outrageous video “Trump Gaza,” which promised to build a resort in the glory of the real estate magnate on Palestinian territory.
