The United States and Iran are sending conflicting signals regarding talks between the two nations. Could the ongoing conflict in the Middle East impact the upcoming midterm elections? Iran rejects Trump’s new ultimatum in the Middle East war. Despite the war, oil exports from the Iranian Kharg region are on the rise. Donald Trump claims negotiations are underway, while Tehran remains vague on the matter. This discrepancy may be attributed to the U.S. taking the lead in current discussions to end the conflict, according to political science analyst and Sciences Po Paris doctoral student, Georges Mercier. “The United States is playing its role on the global stage in a certain way. We had an empire presenting itself as a stabilizing force, launching a military operation that creates real chaos in the energy markets. We have not really felt that yet, but if the war continues, we will face a major energy shock,” explained the expert in an interview on LCN. Several Asian countries are facing supply disruptions due to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz. Some nations are forced to ration gasoline, while others are experiencing shortages. “We are asking the population to save every drop of gasoline. It shows how serious the situation could be,” mentioned Georges Mercier. “The president has ordered an end to this conflict to maintain the standing, in plain French, of Americans on the international stage,” he added.
