Donald Trump issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Iran on Saturday to reach an agreement or reopen the strategic Strait of Hormuz, while an emblematic Iranian nuclear power plant was attacked.
On the 36th day of the war triggered by an Israeli-American offensive against Iran, the country’s authorities and the American army continued their search for a missing American pilot after the crash of a fighter jet the previous day in the southwest of the country.
“You remember when I gave Iran 10 days to CONCLUDE AN AGREEMENT or REOPEN THE STRAIT OF HORMUZ. Time is running out – 48 hours before unleashing hell on them,” wrote the US president on his Truth Social platform.
Earlier on Saturday, the Bushehr nuclear power plant, built with the help of Russia, was hit by an attack. It is the only operational civilian nuclear facility in Iran and has been targeted four times since the beginning of the war on February 28.
Located by the Gulf, the plant is closer to capitals like Kuwait City or Doha than Tehran, over 750 km away.
According to the Irna news agency, a projectile hit “an area near the plant,” where a guard was killed. No damage was reported on the facilities, according to the same source.
“No increase in radiation levels” was reported by Iran, said the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), whose director general, Rafael Grossi, expressed his “deep concern.”
He stressed that “nuclear power plant sites or surrounding areas should never be attacked.”
Russia condemned the strike, announcing that nearly 200 employees of the giant nuclear company Rosatom had started evacuating the plant “about 20 minutes” after the strike on the site.
