The President Donald Trump asks Congress to increase defense spending

The President Donald Trump is asking Congress to increase defense spending by 1.5 trillion dollars, the largest request of its kind in decades and the latest sign of the importance the president places on American military investments at the expense of domestic programs.

The document released by the White House states that Trump’s proposal would reduce non-defense spending by 10% by transferring some responsibilities to states and local communities.

Even before the war threats against Iran by the United States, the Republic President had signaled his desire to increase defense spending to modernize the military to face 21st-century threats. Additionally, the Pentagon proposed a budget of 200 billion dollars last month for the war effort and ammunition and equipment procurement.

Donald Trump’s priority: the military

Donald Trump, speaking before his address to the nation this week on the Iran war, stated that the military was his priority, sparking new debates in Congress.

“We are at war. We don’t have time to focus on childcare,” declared Donald Trump at a private event at the White House on Wednesday, April 1st. “We cannot manage childcare, Medicaid, Medicare – all these individual programs. That’s the states’ responsibility. We can’t do it at the federal level.”

The President’s annual budget is generally seen as a reflection of the administration’s values and does not have the force of law. This extensive document typically highlights the administration’s priorities, but Congress, which handles federal spending issues, is free to reject it and often does.
