cyberattack – FBI Qualifies Chinese Cyber-Attack as Major Incident

The United States has recognized a significant security breach in their digital security. In early March, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) first alerted Congress to suspicious activities involving “sensitive” information. Last week, they classified a cyber-attack on one of their surveillance systems as a “major incident,” as reported by Bloomberg and Politico. This classification suggests that this hacking operation poses significant risks to U.S. national security.

According to Politico, initial indications suggest that the hackers compromised sensitive data stored directly on FBI systems, a serious failure for the United States.

According to NBC, U.S. authorities suspect the Chinese group Salt Typhoon, whose hacking methods are reportedly similar. A spokesperson for the federal agency declined to respond to Politico, referring to a previous official statement: “The FBI has identified and addressed suspicious activities on its networks, and we have mobilized all our technical capabilities to respond.”
