In 2023, Randy George, appointed by Joe Biden, could leave his position before the end of his term, while General Christopher LaNeve is emerging as a potential successor.
The US Defense Minister, Pete Hegseth, has secured the immediate departure of Army Chief of Staff General Randy George, according to an American official regarding this dismissal that occurs during the war against Iran. This very high-ranking official “will leave his position as the 41st Army Chief of Staff, with immediate effect,” wrote X Sean Parnell, the Pentagon spokesperson, wishing him “a happy retirement.” He does not give the reason for this sudden departure.
CBS News, which revealed the information, cites an anonymous American official claiming that Pete Hegseth wants to appoint someone in his place who can implement Donald Trump’s and his minister’s vision for the army. General Randy George, a graduate of the prestigious West Point Military Academy who has served in Iraq and Afghanistan, was appointed to this position in 2023, during the term of Democratic President Joe Biden.
Potential politicization of the army
This is another forced departure among the highest ranks of the American army since Donald Trump returned to power. The American president had, without explanation, fired Charles “CQ” Brown, the Joint Chiefs of Staff, at the beginning of 2025, to replace him with Dan Caine. Since then, the heads of the Navy, Coast Guard, NSA spying agency, as well as many others, have been pushed out by the Trump administration.
Pete Hegseth, heading a ministry he renamed “War Ministry,” assured that he simply chooses the leaders he wants to lead the world’s largest military budget. Democratic opposition lawmakers have expressed concern about the potential politicization of the army, which is traditionally more isolated from political battles than the rest of the American state apparatus.
