The British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has defended NATO as “the most effective military alliance the world has ever known,” following criticism from US President Donald Trump.
NATO “has ensured our security for several decades and we are fully committed” to this alliance, the Labour leader stated during a press conference at Downing Street. In an interview with the Daily Telegraph published on Wednesday, Donald Trump reiterated his criticisms of the Atlantic Alliance, calling it a “paper tiger” for not wanting to participate in the war against Iran.
The UK will also host a meeting this week with around thirty countries to mobilize efforts to restore and ensure security in the Strait of Hormuz, Keir Starmer announced.
“The UK has now brought together 35 nations around our joint declaration of intent to stand together for maritime security in the Gulf. Later this week, the Foreign Secretary (Yvette Cooper) will host a meeting of these countries for the first time,” the Prime Minister stated during a press conference at Downing Street.
