A Russian oil tanker docked in a Cuban port on Tuesday to deliver the first shipment of crude oil since January, providing relief from the energy blockade imposed by the United States.

The Anatoly Kolodkin, carrying 730,000 barrels of crude oil, arrived in Matanzas, east of Havana, around 08:15 local time (12:15 GMT), according to an AFP team on site. This marks Cuba’s first oil shipment since January 9.

President Donald Trump’s decision to allow Russia to deliver oil to Cuba, despite a de facto American embargo since the beginning of the year, helps avoid a confrontation with Moscow and provides breathing room to the communist island of 9.6 million people.

However, the White House assures that American sanctions remain unchanged, with spokesperson Karoline Leavitt referring to “case-by-case decisions.”

Cubans in Matanzas witnessed the arrival of the massive Russian vessel with tugboats guiding it into the port. Some expressed gratitude for the delivery, recognizing the vital importance of oil for the country’s survival.

Cuba has been facing an economic and energy crisis for years, exacerbated by the suspension of Venezuelan oil supplies in January following the capture of President Nicolas Maduro by the U.S. The Russian cargo is seen as a temporary respite but falls short of addressing the country’s significant deficits.

The aim of American restrictions is to compel Havana to make substantial concessions at the negotiation table, according to analysts. The strategy is to push the system to the brink without causing a complete collapse or humanitarian catastrophe.

Despite recent threats from Trump, Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel confirmed talks with Washington in mid-March. Analysts believe the Russian shipment, while providing some relief, is more of a humanitarian gesture than an economic solution.
