King Charles will make his first state visit to the United States at the end of April, on the occasion of the 250th anniversary of American independence. This trip has caused backlash in the United Kingdom following recent insults from Donald Trump.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will travel to the United States for a state visit at the end of April, Buckingham Palace announced on Tuesday, amid conflicts in the Middle East and tensions between Washington and London.

Their itinerary “will celebrate the historical ties and current bilateral relations between the UK and the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence,” according to a statement.

The exact dates of the visit will be announced later, the palace added.

The king and queen will then visit Bermuda, marking the monarch’s first visit to a UK Overseas Territory since ascending to the throne in September 2022.

“On the recommendation of Her Majesty’s government and at the invitation of the President of the United States, the king and queen will make a state visit to the United States of America. Their Majesties’ program will celebrate the historical ties and modern bilateral relationship between the UK and the United States, marking the 250th anniversary of American independence,” a statement from the king’s official account read.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump expressed joy over the visit on his social network, Truth Social. “Melania and I are pleased to announce that Their Majesties, the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, will travel to the United States for a historic state visit from April 27 to 30, including a magnificent gala dinner at the White House on the evening of April 28. This memorable event will be even more special this year as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of our great country. I look forward to spending time with the king, for whom I have immense respect. It will be GREAT!”

London and Washington, linked by 250 years of history, have a “special relationship” characterized by very close diplomatic, military, and economic ties.

During her reign, Queen Elizabeth II was received on four occasions for a state visit to the United States, notably in 1976 to celebrate the bicentennial of American independence and in 1991, with a historic address to the US Congress.

Known for being an admirer of the royal family, Donald Trump expressed in mid-March at the White House that he was “really looking forward to seeing the king.”
