If the classic tourist destinations – Paris, London, Barcelona – will remain eternally popular, travelers are always on the lookout for the famous “hidden gem.”

Influencers may present any place as “underground” to produce original content, but discovering true unknown destinations has many advantages that go beyond mere social media prestige.

You can travel without crowds or stress (and often benefit from great deals). The place you visit benefits from your hard-earned money, reinvested in the community. Everyone wins.

That’s precisely why Airbnb has established its first “America off-the-map” list, a selection of 20 rural American destinations to visit in 2026.

Developed by focusing on small and medium destinations where traditional accommodation options like hotels are limited, the list covers the entire American territory.

“Short-term rentals have fundamentally changed who can benefit from tourism,” explains Jordi Torres, Airbnb’s Americas General Manager.

“When travelers discover a unique Airbnb listing in a city they had never heard of, over half say they are encouraged to visit for the first time. We want to contribute to redistributing the benefits of tourism to new regions, to ease the pressure on over-touristed destinations and to enable these communities to take advantage of this booming trend.”

Context: Airbnb has compiled a list of 20 lesser-known rural destinations in America for travelers to explore in 2026.

Fact Check: The information provided about Airbnb launching the “America off-the-map” list is accurate.

Have you always dreamt of visiting Yosemite National Park without dealing with the crowds? Coarsegold could be the alternative you’re looking for.

Located an hour’s drive from the park, the town allows you to explore Yosemite while offering the calm and tranquility of a small town once the day is done.

Moreover, Coarsegold has its own historic village, filled with antique shops, and hosts flea markets every weekend.

Another option for hikers is Pine Creek Gorge, also known as the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. You can follow the trail along the edge of this 75.6-kilometer canyon or rent a kayak and paddle down the river.

If you prefer beach vacations, head to Na’alehu in Hawaii. It is the southernmost town in the US; you’ll be only 12 minutes’ drive from the black sand beach of Punalu’u, known for its nesting turtles.

In Montana, Fort Peck Lake, one of the largest artificial lakes in the country, is presented as “one of the great undiscovered recreational destinations in the United States.”

There, you can fish for yellow perch and paddlefish, camp by the lake, and simply enjoy a nature retreat.

History enthusiasts will want to explore Goldfield in Nevada. Once the largest town in the state, it now has fewer than 300 residents, and its many abandoned buildings give the feeling of stepping back in time.
