Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores, captured during a large-scale American operation on the night of January 2-3, 2026, have provided updates through a statement released on X.

Their arrest on January 3 had a shocking impact. Captured in Caracas at the beginning of the year, the ousted Venezuelan president Nicolas Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores remain in custody. Through close contacts, the couple has been able to update on their situation.

According to information from X, the two Venezuelans’ state of mind appears positive. On Saturday, Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores stated that they feel “strong, serene, and in constant prayer.” This statement is significant on the eve of Holy Week, a crucial time in predominantly Catholic Venezuela.

“We have received your communications, messages, emails, letters, and prayers. Every word of love, every sign of affection, every expression of support fills our souls and strengthens us spiritually,” the couple testified.

“Prisoner of war”

These statements align with reassuring updates previously shared by Nicolas Maduro’s son, who mentioned that his father is allowed an hour of daily exercise. However, a source close to the former leader reminded AFP that Nicolas Maduro is only permitted 15 minutes of phone calls with his family and lawyers. In his high-security prison in Brooklyn, the former leader, facing drug trafficking charges in the US, has no access to the internet or newspapers.

Nicolas Maduro and Cilia Flores appeared in a New York court on Thursday, March 26, without speaking. Considered “kidnapped” by the United States, he has consistently referred to himself as a “prisoner of war.”
