United States might no longer aid NATO in case of need, warns Donald Trump

Donald Trump declared on Friday that the United States might not come to NATO’s aid in case of need, reiterating his criticism of the Atlantic alliance during a business forum in Miami.

“They were just not there,” the American president said, referring to Washington’s request for military support from its allies to secure the Strait of Hormuz, which went unanswered.

“We spend hundreds of billions of dollars a year on NATO, hundreds of billions, to protect them, and we would always be there for them, but now, given their actions, I guess we’re no longer on duty, are we?” he said.

United States will “remember”

In recent weeks, the American president has made bellicose statements towards NATO, calling it a “PAPER TIGER” and “COWARDS” on his Truth Social network. “The United States will remember,” he said during a Cabinet meeting on Thursday.

The United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, and Japan had said they were ready, in a joint statement on March 19, to “contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure the security of the strait,” through which a fifth of the world’s oil production normally transits. However, they excluded any direct military involvement.

Traffic in this strait is virtually paralyzed, leading to a surge in energy prices.

During his speech in Miami, in front of business leaders and investors gathered for the “FII Priority” summit, Donald Trump once again assured that the military operation against Iran, now entering its fifth week, was going well.
