Although he is not yet a presidential candidate, the current Minister of Justice has no shortage of ideas. Gérald Darmanin proposes “a three-year moratorium on legal immigration”, considering that “we have reached the limit of our capacities for integration and assimilation”, he reveals in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche.
“We must put an end to immigration as it is today”, continues the Minister of Justice, estimating that “this question will have to be decided at the next presidential election”. “We could start by considering that residence permits issued for work – which is undoubtedly important in certain sectors of activity – no longer give right to family reunification. I also propose to reform the Constitution to allow the establishment of restrictive quotas – and not indicative ones as is the case today”, explains the Minister of Justice.
Regarding a referendum on the question of immigration, Gérald Darmanin assures that he has “never been afraid of the word given to the people” and insists: “The Constitution will have to be changed. HAS”

The one who has been a member of almost all of the governments under the presidency of Emmanuel Macron since 2017 – with the exception of that of Michel Barnier between September and December 2024 – also argues that “a lot of things will happen within a year”: “I will make my decision (to be a candidate or not in the 2027 presidential election) based on the sole interest of my country. The former member of the RPR and the UMP also qualified the candidacy of the boss of his Renaissance party, Gabriel Attal, as that of “progressive social democracy” – recognizing him as “many qualities”, “respect and sincere friendship” – and that of LR Bruno Retailleau as of “the conservative right”.
