Stéphane Porret, previously elected as opposition in Sommières, triumphed this Sunday evening by winning the mayorship of the Gardoise commune with 5,000 inhabitants, at the crossroads of Hérault and Gard, in a landslide victory over incumbent mayor Pierre Martinez.
The outgoing mayor seemed stressed and evasive with the press, already hinting at the outcome of the election at the start of the evening. Stéphane Porret, the previous opposition leader in Sommières, easily won the municipal election from the first round with 54% of the votes. The incumbent mayor, also president of the community of communes of Pays de Sommières, Pierre Martinez, was defeated with 33% of the votes. Far behind, Christophe Clément, who presented his list “l’union populaire sommiéroise” at the last minute, still obtained 13% of the votes.
59.62% voter turnout
Around 7:30 PM, there was a crowd in Sommières, at the municipal gym hosting two of the three polling stations in the heart of the town. “It’s important to witness the democratic exercise unfold!” commented Alain, attentive to the ballot counting in front of him.
The voter turnout in the town reached 59.82% throughout the day. Predictions were rife throughout the day about the future mayor, even at the closing of the polling stations. Most voters, however, expected a “relatively close election.”
A clear and decisive victory
By 6:30 PM, the dismayed faces of the scrutineers tasked with the public counting of the ballots quickly foreshadowed Stéphane Porret’s clear victory, officially declared the winner of the election at the La Calade socio-cultural space just before 9 PM.
Stéphane Porret, a 54-year-old civil engineer and former opposition leader in Sommières, distinguished himself during the campaign with his long-lasting efforts. “A campaign that started two years ago, going door to door! That’s a commendable effort!” praised Christophe Clément, while Pierre Martinez chose not to address the press about his defeat.
Some of Martinez’s supporters denounced the election outcome as “particularly unfair,” while others cited his political decisions as “misunderstood,” especially the drastic increase in property tax in 2024. “He had finally started to improve financially. It’s precisely during this upcoming term that he could have implemented his program,” a resident lamented.
While promising not to hold multiple positions, Stéphane Porret dedicated his victory to his father during his speech. He also pledged to defend the interests of Sommières residents with rigor, transparency, and sincerity.
