This Wednesday, the community of the French Riviera agglomeration (Carf) will install its new president.
The mayors of the fifteen member communes, victorious in the March 15 and 22 elections, must in turn choose the representative of the territory.
Alexandra Masson, the National Rally mayor of Menton, has never hidden her ambition to govern the Carf, like her predecessors. This is causing concern on the left.
Citizen mobilization is planned for this Wednesday at 6 p.m. in front of the Palais de l’Europe.
An expressed concern is widely expressed about the future of the Carf
In an open letter, residents of Roya, including Cedric Herrou, expressed their “concerns” and “fears” regarding the political positions of the mayors in the hinterland.
They question whether the mayors will support the extreme right-wing National Rally party in the presidency of Carf.
The bureau members – presidents and vice-presidents – are elected in the same way as the mayor, through a majority vote.
There can be multiple candidates, but only one winner in the end.
Unlike the citizens, it is the community councilors (mayors and deputies) who vote in secret, during the first meeting of the new community council. Scheduled for this Wednesday evening, therefore.
For the signatories, “this vote concerns all the inhabitants of our territory” and their future.
The intercommunality has several responsibilities, including water management, waste, agriculture, transport, and can influence the allocation of social housing.
They demand transparency and call to fight against the extreme right-wing.
Considering the Carf’s responsibilities and the policies of the National Rally in other territories, the collective sees the potential arrival of Alexandra Masson at the head of the intercommunality as detrimental.
They find it inappropriate for their mayors and councilors to elect someone who does not support the diversity of their territories, residents, and associations.
They ask the members to take responsibility and oppose the extreme right, calling to “block any racist, discriminatory, and anti-social policies.”
