The attacks came from all sides. From the left, and from the right. Just like a week ago, deputies widely expressed on Tuesday the concern of the French people regarding the rise in fuel prices. Sometimes with violence: “Your lies disguise your bad decisions. Make way for those who know,” declared RN deputy from the North Sébastien Chenu. The far-right party, along with its ally the UDR, is calling for a reduction in VAT to 5.5%. “The government has been completely out of line since the beginning of this crisis,” explained Marine Le Pen, leader of the RN deputies, in the corridors of the Assembly.

Since the start of this crisis, the government has been on the defensive. “For less than that, we had the yellow vests,” confided a government member, worried. “The subject is inflammatory,” admitted a government adviser, who insisted that one key aspect is the securing of the Strait of Hormuz, acknowledging the government’s lack of maneuvering room on the issue.

Playing defense means supporting professionals in distress as much as possible. Additional targeted assistance for French workers who depend on their vehicles will be announced by the Prime Minister. The extent of these measures is not yet known. For La France Insoumise (LFI), the government’s response should be more comprehensive and involve price freezes and margin controls. But this is not a viable solution for the government, which points out risks of shortages or supply chain tensions in the global market. “The state is not profiting from the crisis, whereas Marine Le Pen is speculating on the back of this crisis. She has been speculating politically since the first days of this energy crisis and it is extremely serious,” denounced Maud Bregeon, government spokesperson and delegate minister in charge of energy. According to her, the increase in VAT revenue is offset by the decrease in consumption.
