In the United States, local elections are unfolding similarly across the country: the Democratic Party is gaining momentum, riding on an anti-Trump wave.
Just fourteen months of Trump’s presidency have been enough to revive the Democrats. Once considered on the decline after the 2024 presidential election loss by Kamala Harris following Joe Biden’s failed candidacy, they seem unstoppable now. Winning one election after another at the local level.
Last week, one of their candidates emerged victorious in Palm Beach, in the county where Mar-a-Lago, Donald Trump’s luxurious residence, is located. The fact that the President’s neighbors could elect a progressive young woman to the Florida Parliament has amused many in the United States. This election is part of a trend where conservative candidates are being defeated across the country, garnering far fewer votes than in previous elections.
Republicans are no longer taking things lightly. Governor of Florida, Ron DeSantis, a potential candidate for the 2028 presidential election, emphasized the need for Republicans to be aware of the political context leading up to the mid-term elections. Polls are showing catastrophic results for them.
Outlook on the Midterms
Projections indicate a potential significant victory for Democrats in the upcoming Midterms, which will renew the House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate. The progressive camp might even secure a majority in the Senate, which seemed impossible a few months ago given the seats up for reelection in conservative states.
There seems to be a widespread discontent in the United States with the policies coming out of the White House. The management of illegal immigration and the war in Iran, which broke a campaign promise and led to fuel price hikes, have exacerbated Americans’ disillusionment with the President. Donald Trump’s popularity rating has plummeted below 35%, especially among the demographics that supported him in 2024.
In addition to the rejection of Republicans, there is a new wave of Democratic figures emerging across America. Younger, less political, but more focused on everyday issues. Zohran Mamdani, elected mayor of New York on the affordability issue, is one prominent figure.
Governor of California Gavin Newsom is a top contender alongside other well-known figures like Kamala Harris and Arizona Senator Mark Kelly. However, the desire for fresh faces may lead to unexpected candidacies, similar to Obama in 2009. Jon Ossoff, a Georgia senator, has been gaining attention with his speeches. With Donald Trump as a negative influence, Democrats see a golden opportunity ahead.
