Budget cuts in culture: about thirty protesters in Bourg-en

Around thirty people responded this Thursday to the call from the newly established local section of the CGT Spectacle to denounce the ongoing precariousness of the entire cultural ecosystem. There was no sound system or loudspeaker, and no leaflets for this gathering, which aims at “visibility before demands”. Just a few regular activists, sympathizers from the national stage, a tent to protect against an alternative weather. And a banner hung on the facade of the venue to warn of the impending danger.

“The people no longer have access to shows”

This is due to the budget cuts denounced all over France for months, even years. And their effects, like a “snowball effect”, continue to weaken the situation of workers in the arts, performing arts, and creation fields. “These restrictions no longer allow financing for certain initiatives, especially in small venues, which used to be spread across the territory and infused culture everywhere,” explains Lauriane, who came especially from Meximieux. “Today, these small venues no longer have the means to hire artists, and people no longer have access to shows. As a result, it is increasingly difficult to accumulate the required 507 working hours to qualify for the indemnity scheme.”

This is what this national day of mobilization is all about: defending cultural and performing arts professions, pushing for changes in the protection of intermittent workers and the strengthening of social rights. And securing public funding that reflects the contributions of this sector to society.
