Since 2015 and the massive influx of Syrians fleeing the civil war, all over Europe, leaders and their opponents seem to engage in a competition of closure, inflexibility, and responsibility – at least that’s how they proclaim it – to show themselves as the most attentive, rigorous, and strict in the fight against illegal immigration. A escalation that is not without exception. Angela Merkel in Germany once served as a notable counter-example, and stills remains subject to variable geometry, since the influx of Ukrainians fleeing the war, in the first years at least, prompted a wave of solidarity supported by the public authorities. Yet, a ramp-up all the same, which is gradually reaching the institutions of the European Union.

The Context: – Since 2015, there has been a significant influx of Syrian refugees, leading to a debate among European leaders about immigration policies.

Fact Check: – Angela Merkel initially supported Ukrainian refugees in contrast to the stricter immigration policies of other European leaders.
