The elections in the Landtag of Baden-Württemberg saw the AfD (populist right-wing party) double its score. This is likely to happen again this Sunday in Rhineland-Palatinate. The bilingual hip-hop group Zweierpasch (Kehl-Freibourg) is releasing a song against right-wing extremism in Germany: “Nix Gelernt”. “Everything burns on November 9 / We have books, films, Internet / We have photos, history experts, even grandparents at heart / But we have not learned anything from the dark past,” they sing. “We are shocked by the rise of extreme right, undemocratic, repugnant parties. Just a few years ago, we thought such a thing was impossible in Germany due to our dark past. That’s why, with “Nix gelernt,” we offer a three-minute crash course on German history to all those who are targeting the wrong thing,” explain the rappers Till and Felix Neumann. “Germany needs a peaceful rebellion against right-wing extremism. A good part of this movement resembles the era preceding Hitler’s rise to power. Music must engage with songs about resistance and uniting music,” they add. “Politics struggle to cope with the multiple crises in the world. Anyone who still settles for simplistic answers like ‘it’s the fault of migrants’ leaves us speechless. Please, think before you vote. And please, to all democratic parties: more courage. We urgently need solutions for more social justice, sustainability, and diversity,” they urge. The group is pleased with the positive feedback on this calm song, with a beautiful piano, as well as its video, some scenes of which were filmed at the Donon temple. Images of a former concentration camp and criminal fires have been added. “Our way of defending democracy is through music. This song is pure Zweierpasch,” they say confidently.
